Grains @ India In Focus Festival, Sept 25th, 2015

aam-4

Surabhi Saraf with Ian Smith-Heisters will perform “Grains” at the Peirce Studio at 10pm, on 9/25, admission is FREE.

GRAINS is an original audio-visual performance deals with expanding the sonic energy that resides in a single grain of sound. The performance explores the visual and sonic amplification of domestic food grains and their transformation into a collection of solid grains that flow like liquid as they multiply. Layering her vocals on top of the flowing grains, Surabhi Saraf weaves a rich tapestry of sounds, multiplied and fragmented, creating dynamic textures and immersive architectural soundscapes. It was first performed at the Asian Art Museum in May, 2013. In this collaboration with Ian Smith-Heisters, the visual space is transformed by projections that pulsate alongside the sound, magnifying the performance’s granular energy.

Grains @ 4th Thessaloniki Performance Festival, Greece , July 6th 2015

The Thessaloniki Performance Festival, following the biennial rhythm of the Biennale, aspires to build and develop an open field of experimentation and a timely dialogue of communication and communion around the ephemeral practice of performance, by promoting and showcasing the latest body-based and experiential pursuits, helping establish the art of performance. The dialogue between artists and audiences, which has been a staple of all previous editions of the Festival, reveals the wide scope and interdisciplinary nature of the art of performance. On that basis, the works presented touch on a variety of issues and themes, reflect aesthetic diversity, record present-day socio-political issues and the personal conflicts of artists, take a critical look at the establishment and all forms of oppression, while also expressing the urgent necessity for the emergence of active and interventional communication. By stressing the interactive and subversive nature of performance and the great diversity of its disciplines, interpretations and approaches, artists are called upon to participate in a process of “live” exchange of views and ideas, articulating and sharing their experiences and stories. This convergence of the various disciplines, comprising performance’s conceptual substance, coexists with a declared desire to trace and investigate the role of performance artists and the essence of an art form that is shaped by and, in turn, helps shape socio-political processes.

@ Corpus Callosum 750 Natoma Street, S.F.
$20/per person
Limited to 12 spots!
RESERVE YOUR SPOT securely via PayPal

Sound artists Andrea Williams and Surabhi Saraf use field recordings to improvise an eight-hour musical composition for an audience that sleeps in the performance space. Participants are encouraged to then journal their dreams in the morning. SleepWalks endeavors to discover the influence of sound on dream worlds. Wine and water will be provided at the reception at 9pm (Doors to the event close at 10pm.), and also tea, coffee, and muffins will be provided in the morning. Please bring your own bedding, pillow, toiletries, comfortable clothes for sleeping in. Spots are limited for this collective dreaming event. RSVP is via PayPal.——–>

During SleepWalks, the performers record the sound samples that they use. Later, by reading the timestamp, they mark possible correlations between the sounds in the improvisation and writings from the participants’ dream journals. The goal of this long-term project is to provide an engaging experience for collective dreaming and to compose soundwalks for dreamers.

SleepWalks has been performed at numerous venues including Issue Project Room, NYC; Intersection for the Arts, SF; Diapason Gallery, NYC; Parsons Hall Gallery, MA; and Mills College, Oakland, CA as part of The Deep Listening Institute’s Dream Festival. Current SleepWalks collaborators: Andrea Williams, Lee Pembleton, Surabhi Saraf, and Todd Anderson.

SleepWalks does not use spoken word as part of their guided dreaming. They do not use hypnosis, subliminal, nor subconscious verbal manipulation. Rather, they create an audio travelogue of abstract soundscapes; suggestions of environments.

ILLUMINEN // LIVE, Goethe Institut, Max Mueller Bhavan, New Delhi

Image 0930th January, 2013

On this evening Surabhi will perform two tracks from the album. Both pieces were conceived as live performances involving live video, choreographed lights and performers. The performances will take the audience on a journey of synaesthetic experiences, showing how our perception of the self is constructed through our senses. The artists’s vision for the evening is to accentuate each sense, addressing their value individually and in blended concert.

The evening progresses from ‘Spinning Four’, a visually rich immersive sonic experience that  stimulates external senses, to ‘Illuminen’, which focuses inward, negotiating ideas of entertainment, experience, sensation and sensationalism with the conviction that it is actually the numbing of certain sensory realities that generates crucial moments in socio-cultural transformation.
